Out of sight, out of mind is a saying many people know well. Often, we don’t see the dentist until pain strikes, only to learn we have a cavity, need a root canal, or even worse, require a tooth extraction. The emphasis on oral health during school age years is often placed on the back burner since most serious problems occurs later in their adult life - the final result being tooth loss which then leads to a cascade of other problems like bone loss and even malnutrition.

But... did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States? The rise in processed food consumption, combined with poor oral habits, has led to more cavities and gum disease among school-age children. While permanent tooth loss is most commonly caused by untreated severe decay or dental trauma. There are socioeconomic and demographic disparities where children who are from high-poverty backgrounds average 3.3 missing teeth compared to less than 1 in higher income peers.

The cost of replacing teeth can lead to tens of thousands of dollars and with the U.S. without a strong dental policy many people forego the option of an implant in favor of cheaper alternatives. MSK understands that oral health will become an increasingly vital issue in the U.S. We aim to strengthen our group's focus and eventually expand our outreach to less privileged areas.

Tooth Day 2027 aims to raise awareness about this silent epidemic and inform the public about the importance of our teeth.
